 Colonia Ulpia Traiana
The Colonia Ulpia Traiana existed until 276 AD. Then the Franks attacked the town and may have driven out its inhabitants. The remaining population, supported by the military, built a fort in what had been the town centre, which existed until about the year 350. Roman rule in the Rhine area came to an end in about the year 400.
The Roman town was an extremely successful model. The newly created towns became the centres of
Romanisation in all the conquered provinces of the Roman Empire. They were centres of attraction for the local population, and for citizens from Italy they were "Rome abroad".
Some of the buildings were reconstructed (exact size, exact materials, exact location) and it is possible for us now to get an idea of ancient architecture. These reconstructions are the main part of Archeological Park Xanten.
Now you can enjoy another reconstruction of the city - the virtual one.
On the CD you will find not only 3D-Reconstruction, but also some information about Colonia Ulpia Traiana in pictures, videos and texts. CD-ROM is belingual (German / English), but all Videos were not translated in English, only Texts.
The whole programm was created as a HTML-Site, so it is very easy to navigate. To be able to take a look at the reconstruction you have to install a VRML-Player and it is also included on the CD. You can navigat through the reconstruction with your mouse or with your keyboard (arrow-buttons). You can also start reconstructions from CD-ROM directly (without starting the main programm). In such way you will be able to see reconstructions as full-screen. Reconstructions could have had more detailes, they are unfortunately very simple.
